The euphemisms that conceal hatred.
The Third Reich often used euphemistic terms to describe aspects of the Holocaust, while attempting to conceal the
deliberate, carefully planned destruction, and genocide of the Jewish population.
Incorporated from the beginning, Nazi euphemisms played an important role in
the entire dehumanizing and genocidal process of the Holocaust.
Indeed, in order to obscure the real intent, and
to disguise the hatred and fate confronting the Jewish people, distinct terminology was used with obvious intent. Whether
it was locating, extricating or in everyday dealings with the Jewish population, the Nazis went out of their way to smooth
their path with obfuscations designed to deceive and mislead the Jews into a false sense of security..
From the beginning, Hitler spoke of the
need to "purify" and "cleanse" the Reich of the Jewish "vermin" and
to "decontaminate" or "disinfect" the Reich of the Jewish "bacillus".
Jews being classed as "inferior" (Untermensch).
Ultimately, the "Jewish Problem" was to be solved through the "Final Solution";
a euphemism for extermination.
"Resettlement" referred to the deportation of the Jews to the death camps. The victims were led to believe that they were being
resettled on Jewish reservations in the east.
"Aktion" was another euphemism for an operation involving the mass assembly, deportation and murder of Jews.
German "special duty units" (Einsatzgruppen) were mobile killing squads employed in the murder
of Jews.
"Special treatment" (Sonderbehandlung)
meant execution.
"Final solution" (Endlösung) referred to the systematic extermination
and mass murder of the Jewish people, the systematic destruction of European Jewry.
"Disinfection
chamber" (Entwesungskammer, Desinfektion, Entlausungsanstalt): was used to refer to a gas chamber.
"Resettlement" (Umsiedlung, Aussiedlung) really meant deportation.
"Cleansing" (Sauberung) involved sending Jews through the death process.
"Selection" was a euphemism for the process of choosing Jewish victims for the gas
chambers in the Nazi camps.
"Special Handling"
(Sonderbehandlung) referred to the extermination of the Jews.
Terms such as "euthanasia" and "mercy death" cloaked the murders of the handicapped.
The "process of hate"
has not died.
The principles
used in the Holocaust have not gone away.
Today alternate terms are again being used
to describe the same hateful phenomenon, with the Jewish people being faced with an anti-Semitism, whether crude or sophisticated,
which very often travels under an alias called anti-Zionism.
The quality of the obsession
with the malefactions of the Jewish state alone, among all the member states of the world community, and the extremity of
their denunciations of it, show what is really concealed under the mask.
The rising
flood of anti-Semitism under the pseudo guide of "legitimate" criticism of Israel is raging unabated throughout
the Western world, not least in this country.
There has been indignation on
the part of many, however hostile to the Jews, at being painted with the anti-Semitic "brush".
Hitler gave anti-Semitism a "bad name" and there is widespread
reluctance on the part of even the most severe critics of the Jews to accept this label.
Zionism.
Zionism can be defined as
the fervent desire of Jews of the Diaspora to return to their ancestral homeland.
Indeed, the Jews are now again a people with their own land, their own capital city, their own culture and language.
They once had their own monarchy, they now have their own democratic government.
The Jews were never a people without a homeland. The land always existed, as did a Jewish presence within it. It
was only Jewish sovereignty in the land that was missing.
Jews
in the Diaspora never ceased to give expression to their anguish at their deprivation of their ability to return, and for
millennia Jews gave voice to their attachment to Zion.
The Jewish people have displayed a remarkable persistence to remain separate as an entity, a distinct body of people,
despite monstrous persecution, culminating in their restoration to their land.
Zionist –
an invective to describe evil.
The term Zionist has become
an invective, used by Muslims, their apologists, and detractors of the Jewish state, to insult their worst enemies, often
portraying them as the incarnation of all things evil.
When
a person professes to be anti-Zionist but doesn't confine their anti-Zionism to Zionism, but extends it to include the
Jewish people and their state, it is clear for me.
Refusing the Jews a state in their homeland at the expense
of others is blatant anti-Semitism.
Many proponents of what
they call anti-Zionism are often utterly oblivious of the true nature of the morbid and primal hatred that they cherish inwardly.
Indeed, the vehemence and toxicity of their rhetoric often falls back on the familiar
cliches of Jew-hatred, showing that they are merely using a political argument to camouflage a religious, racist or ethnophobic
sentiment.
Under the habit of so called legitimate criticism of Israel, and the querying
of Zionism, anti-Semitism has now become a "safe" and shrewd tactic to cloak the hatred.
The distinction between anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, has finally and utterly
collapsed. It is only sophistry, disingenuousness and corrupted conscience that continue to insist upon such a distinction.
The double-speak
of hatred continues.
As stated
earlier, for decades the enemies of the Jewish people have manufactured a whole "new language" which has
been created to camouflage, not only the hatred of the Jewish people, but also the killing of the Jews themselves. It continues
today, now extended into the hatred of the Jewish state of Israel.
"Special treatment", "selections", "aktions", and "final
solution" have been among the euphemisms and obfuscations involved in the "Jewish question".
"Settlers", the "West
Bank" and the "Two-state solution".
Jews residing in the ancient Jewish homeland of Judea and Samaria are called "settlers".
The term "settlers" is meant to dehumanize in itself, removing the human element.
Israel's enemies have made a comprehensive effort to create around the Jewish people as a whole, an atmosphere
of hatred, contempt, and de-humanization, intended to smooth the path, when it becomes physically possible, to their extirpation.
Now the world seeks a "two state solution", to the "Jewish question", which
involves a "Judenfrei" Palestine, as the next step in the PLO plan of phases.
Changing "terminology" has even been extended to de-Judaize the Jewish ancestral homeland. Jordan
has renamed historic Judea and Samaria as the "West Bank".
This principle adopted by Rome in 135AD when they renamed the Jewish homeland "Syria Palestina",
and Jerusalem as "Aelia Capitolina".
It is not strange,
therefore, for anti-Semitism to be hidden under another name.
Anti-Zionism - a new
exile, a new dispersion, a new subjugation... a new Holocaust ?
The
natural progression of anti-Zionism would inflict upon the Jews the horrors of a new exile, a new dispersion, a new subjugation,
and a new deprivation of their ancient homeland. Some fear even another Holocaust.
A simple refutation of the central anti-Zionist thesis does not fully address the moral malignancy that is inherent
to this cause despite there being nothing ethical about a world-view that would deny Jews the same rights of self-definition
and self-determination that are routinely afforded to others.
Anti-Zionism is simply
a new form of anti-Semitism, pure and simple.
Anti-Semitism is itself a political instrument. It is used as a
rallying call among some in the Mid-East and among Israel's detractors.
Many anti-Semites are very aware that
they must be very clever in regard to what he has to say concerning the Jews and Israel.
Anti-Semitism is not
fashionable, so it is more socially acceptable for the proponents to play the "anti-Zionism" card.
The disdain for the collective Jew embodied in the State of Israel is always present,
no matter the denials of those propagating the venom and despite their incessant hair-splitting over the need to separate
anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism.
The quality of the obsession
with the malefactions of the Jewish state alone, among all the member states of the world community, and the extremity of
their denunciations of it, show what is really concealed under the mask.
Israel's
enemies and detractors, constantly seek for some reason to attack the Jewish State, delegitimize its Jewish heritage or express
what can only be called a hatred or visceral disdain for the Jewish people themselves.
The Jewish nature of the
State, what constitutes a Jew, illegal "occupation" of historic Jewish land, Zionism, disproportionate
measures in self-defence. The list is endless. Most of Israel's enemies can find something among these. If not they'll
have no problem making some up.
Decrying someone for justifiably assigning anti-Semitism,
is often used as a shield, to avoid being confronted with any such criticism, while at the same time enabling those responsible
for such visceral disdain to ridicule Israel and the Jewish people with relative impunity; often under the mask of anti-Zionism.
Thus the anti-Semite is able to release his intrinsic savagery without succumbing to remorse, shame
"...The
anti-Semite rejoices at any opportunity to vent his malice. The times have made it unpopular in the West to proclaim openly
a hatred of the Jews. This being the case the anti-Semite must constantly seek new forms and forums for his poison. How he
must revel in the new masquerade. He does not hate Jews; he is just anti-Zionist! When people criticise Zionism, they mean
Jews, this is God's own truth..."
(from the writings of Martin Luther King Jr.)
